Alexa, please turn on the lights.

Did you find it relatable?

Yes, your Alexa is a small example of a magical thing called IoT.

What is the internet of things?

Basically, IoT is a technology that allows one to connect the physical objects embedded with sensors, software or any other technology to the common cloud platform so that those objects could directly communicate with each other or share the data with the network.

IoT is an abbreviation of the internet of things.

In IoT, the objects or devices collect physical data via sensors embedded with them and share the data either to the user or cloud platform or directly to other devices by converting them into electrical signals.

IoT has the ability to automate things that were carried out manually by humans before.

Just suppose there is summer going on and you are seating on your couch. your A/c is on and you are enjoying your favourite TV show. Suddenly, you felt that the temperature outside is increasing and you don’t have your A/C remote with you. As soon as you try to get up and find your A/C remote to reduce the temperature, you realise that your A/c already felt your pain and reduced the temperature automatically for you.

Yes, it’s also an example of IoT, where the temperature sensor embedded into your A/C continuously measures the room temperature and tells A/C to increase or decrease the temp according to that.

isn’t it like a miracle?

How does IoT work?

The devices which are connected to the system, have sensors embedded into them. Basically, the sensor is a small device that measures and convert the physical quantity like temperature into an electrical signal. these signals are passed on to the microcontroller or microprocessor in the same device and then that data is shared further with either local network or cloud network.

If there is any need for human interaction, then the data is shown to the user on his mobile or PC. Usually, machine learning is used in most IoT projects. It is a technology that is able to make decisions by itself.

There are actuators (like an LED bulb) connected to the system. When the signals are transmitted to the processors or any user, the data is processed and further commands are given to the actuators like glow LED or of the LED.

IoT Sensors

IoT sensors are the small devices connected in the system which consistently measures the physical quantity like humidity, moisture, temperature or any other physical quantity. It has the ability to convert that physical quantity into an electrical signal.

These sensors are either connected to the processors directly by wired medium or connected with a transmitter by which the signal is transmitted to the processors or to the common cloud platform.

There are different kinds of sensors like temperature sensor, humidity sensor, ultrasonic sensor, IR sensor, pH sensor, pressure sensor, LDR sensor, moisture sensor, etc

IoT devices

There are various devices connected in the network to carry out the function of an IoT project.

Sensors: A device that converts the physical data into an electrical signal

Actuators: Devices that actually take action on the processed data by the system

Software: The main driving code that will carry out all the process

Processor: A device that processes the raw data and gives commands to the actuator

Battery: A power source that provides energy to the components in the system.

Transmitter: A device that transmits the data wirelessly to the network

Receiver: A device that receives the data sent by the transmitter

Applications of IoT

IoT is a technology that is being used in all sectors very efficiently. IoT reduces human intervention in the task and increases the efficiency of the same.

IoT for Security

By using IoT insecurity,

Internet of things is being used in security by connecting the CCTVs and other security devices peer to peer with a cloud.

By this, the authorities can take a watch on things from anywhere in the world. Actuators are being installed there to handle the situations remotely by the systems themselves.

Like if someone is trying to steal anything from a room and there is a kind of IoT security system is installed, as soon as he touches that thing, the doors of the room will be closed automatically, the sirens will sound and emergency signals will be sent to the respective authorities.

IoT in Agriculture

As we know there are too many things on a farm that farmers have to take care of. There are many things that can be automated with the help of IoT.

Like moisture, sensors are installed all over the field and as soon as the water level of the soil goes down, the system will automatically turn the water pumps on and the water will be circulated all over the field without having any intervention of human

There is another example. Many times insects try to destruct the crop. By installing the sensors like ultrasonic and motion detector sensors, we can track the activities of insects in the field and take actions according to that.

IoT in Automobile

Do you forget the dates of servicing of your vehicle and experience breakdown on your drives? IoT brought solutions to that.

There are some IoT features given to the user with recent vehicle models. The companies have embedded various IoT sensors in your car like pressure sensors to let you know about the air pressure in the tyres, temperature sensors to indicate the engine heating, and many more.

There is a feature that if any part of your vehicle is going to break down, the notification will be sent to the respective service centre and they will come to you and provide you with the proper service.

IoT in education

By bringing IoT in the education sector we can literally take education to the next level.

There are many IoT applications available there for education like smart class monitoring, attendance monitoring automation, physical and mental checkups of the students, smart security, advanced study material powered with smart IoT sensors, Learning at home, etc

IoT in Smart cities

As India is a developing country, there are many cities that are being smart. IoT is the technology that is being used vastly in the development of cities.

There are various IoT applications there for smart cities like smart parking, better connectivity, smart security, smart signals, real-time traffic monitoring, smart electricity distribution, etc

IoT for Healthcare

There are many gadgets and wearables that are coming to make healthcare better. Also, the research is going on for smart surgical robots which can also be an example of IoT.

There are some wearable coming in the market which will continuously check your body parameters like your BP, heart rate, sugar, sleeping hours, etc. these devices will be real-time connected with a cloud and the reports will be sent to the respective healthcare centre for monitoring. In case any difficulty will be there in your body parameters, they will contact you and provide you with better healthcare.

In short, the Internet of Things is a technology that is going to be used in every field of your life to change your life like magic.
